There was excitement in the Men’s Championship coming up the final hole. The final group of Scott Underhill, Rich Reeves and Travis Banga were tied in overall score thru 17 holes. Scott, Travis and Rich scrambled up the 18th hole with Rich and Travis making tough bogey’s and Scott making an unfortunate double bogey to miss going to the sudden death playoff heading back to hole 18.
The sudden death playoff started out with Rich hitting a drive down the left side of the fairway. Travis missed his tee shot leaving him to hit a mid-iron for position for his approach into the green. Rich hit a fairway wood to the front of the green leaving him a long pitch to a back flag. Travis hit his third shot right at the flag leaving him a 30 footer up the hill for par. Rich hit a great pitch up to 6 feet. Travis looked over his putt and made a great stroke but came up just short with the wet conditions. Rich went on to make his putt for par and win the Men’s Championship.
Beth Hamilton, our 2017 Women’s Champion, played a great first round shooting a 75 to have a 2 shot lead over Mindy Williams and an 8 shot lead over Robin Mongeon. Beth continued her steady play on Sunday to shoot a 78 to win this year’s Championship by 10 shots.
The Men’s Senior Championship was a tight race. After Saturday’s round, there were 6 people within 4 strokes of the lead which was going to make for a great Sunday finish. Ron Briggs, John Boisvert and Jim Gammon were sitting at 79 after Saturday with past Champion Perry Powers lurking at 80. Ron played a nice round on Sunday shooting an 81 to win by 1 over Jim Cragg and Perry Powers.
The Super-Senior Championship was a battle of experience. The first day Craig Markert held the lead shooting an 83 with Mark Hampton just 2 shots back and Carl Gopfert 5 shots back. Mark Hampton did a fine job at battling the elements shooting a 76 on Sunday to take the win by 4 over Craig Markert. We all should look up to the players in this flight still competing at their respective ages to claim a championship. My hats off to you gentleman.
The Club Championship is one of the most exciting tournaments at any club. This year was not a disappointment by any means. It’s a lot of fun to watch competitive golf and see the excitement when someone posts a great score. Congratulations to our winners on a great weekend of golf.
